AnOther goes to Red Hook
September 12, 2008 on 12:50 pm | In Other-Events, Fashion Week, - SW TEAM | Comments OffAnOther Magazine celebrates its 15th issue Brooklyn-style…

(Jefferson Hack, Mark Ronson, Anouk Lepore, and Sophia Lamar)
I went to AnOther magazine party hosted by Dazed founder Jefferson Hack. It was in a warehouse in a desolate area of Red Hook, Brooklyn. The home (of artist Dustin Yellin) had a living room feel to it. There was an amazing dance performance by the troupe Stephen Petronio Company. They were great! Due to the rain and distance, all the other usual fashion people who seek the party-hopping-train fell wayward —- so that’s why this party felt like family. It was a true gathering of “friends and family” of the magazine.
Then it got better… Jefferson brought out the “magic brownies” in honor of Mark Ronson’s birthday. It sure created some magic in the room. People danced their asses off — especially when Jefferson put on a T-shirt that had no sleeves and florescent green lightning rods.
It was NOT just another party … but cool it was.

September 11, 2008 on 3:01 pm | In Film Festivals, Film, - SW TEAM | Comments OffThis morning I saw The Burning Plain with Charlize Theron and Guillermo Arriaga (writer of 21 Grams and Babel) making his directorial debut. The story was truly unique and captivating, assembled in a similar manner to Arriaga’s above mentioned features. It was smart, powerful and heartbreaking. Charlize was paralyzing, portraying a pained character consumed with guilt, and there were two newbies (J.D. Pardo and Jennifer Lawrence) who were undeniable breakouts.

(Philip Seymour Hoffman and Samantha Morton in Synecdoche, New York directed by Charlie Kaufman)
Yesterday was a LONG day… 2 of the films I saw were nearly three hours long. First one was Spike Lee’s Miracle at St. Anna and the second one was Charlie Kaufman’s Synecdoche, New York. Miracle was set in 1944 during WWII, following a small group of Black American soldiers trapped in a Tuscan Village. I thought this was a good — not great — film. The cinematography was pretty impressive, and the cast was excellent. Surprisingly, I didn’t check my watch, but I was disappointed by the ending. This complicated and intense story somehow managed to be wrapped up with a pretty bow.
Happily, next I went to Kevin Smith’s Zack and Miri Make a Porno, starring Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks. Mr Smith gave a hysterical speech to open the film, in his lovable, self-deprecating way. I’m kind of ready to be over Seth Rogan, but his performance in this film made me fall in love with him all over again. He really is so good. And props to Miss Banks, who is really starting to make a name for herself in this boy’s club. The movie had a great supporting cast, along with some point-on cameos I won’t spoil.
This last film of the day was the one for which I was most excited, Synecdoche, New York with Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener and Samantha Morton. With Charlie Kaufman directing, these were the ingredients to my dream movie. Sadly, I was bored to tears. I was patient during the first hour… then 90 minutes… but I finally threw in the towel around the two hour mark. It was strange and extremely complicated, but I just found the story uninteresting. The talent was perfectly cast, but I really couldn’t (or didn’t want) to care about them.
