“If a girl looks swell when she meets you, who gives a damn if she’s late? Nobody.” -- Holden Caulfield (Catcher in the Rye, JD Salinger)

Since launching in Fall 2009, Caulfield Preparatory designer Vincent Flumiani had a vision to incorporate his love of design with his passion for literature. His concept is as simple as it is intuitive – CP is loosely based on J.D Salinger’s famed “Catcher in the Rye” and each chapter from the story that Vincent writes himself is reflected in the collection. Flumiani took on the task of writing his own story about Finnegan Nash – chapter by chapter. For example, in Chapter One, after the death of his grandfather, the protagonist Finnegan Nash (F.N.) Sinclair leaves his strict, conservative upbringing and embarks on a road trip to find himself from Los Angeles to New York.  The collection is a direct reflection of Finnegan’s west to east travels – starting from the first delivery of wrinkled woven shirts, relaxed henleys, and worn clothing from living out of a car.

I spoke with Vincent himself about his vision, his inspiration, and his all time favorite books (via The Malcolm) – so read my ONE ON ONE here.

Simon Spurr

I just had the chance to chat with Starworks client SIMON SPURR about everything from English influences, excessive Blackberry usage, and why Milo Ventimiglia is the ultimate “SPURR Man”. He notes that his latest collection is inspired by Helmut Newton photographs and that his latest creations show an increase towards romantic styling. While SPURR may be the name on everyones lips – I got to hear from the man himself about how he deals with the fashion game.

After returning last night from a 4 night trip to New Zealand – I had the pleasure of traveling to the other side of the world to check out what New Zealand has to offer on the fashion front. While going in with an open mind – I was pleasantly surprised with many of the collections that I saw. At the top of my list, twentysevennames. After launching in 2006 by Rachel Easting and Anjali Stewart, they have since gathered a cult-like following due to their urban tone and downtown vibe. While their collections can only be found in NZ, Australia and Hong Kong – their mix of velvet, combat boots, apparel cut-outs and fine knitting created an exceptionally wearable third collection. Their collection was presented on Day 1 of Air New Zealand Fashion Week – and definitely set the bar for the rest of the collections presented. Take a peek at some of my favorite pieces from the twentysevennames collection below.

Exclusive Peek at Commonwealth Utilities for S/S —

With Fashion Week just a few days away – Commonwealth Utilities (who we spoke with last year regarding their first collection) is at it again. Creative Director Anthony Keegan, alongside Chandelier Creative’s Richard Christiansen, have produced a follow-up collection that really does define the easy notion of dressing up. A hybrid between a contemporary vibe and the downtown mindset – Commonwealth Utilities recently announced that ex Vogue intern Sean Avery will serve as a “creative conspirator” for the brand.

With their presentation coming up on September 13th – we obtained some exclusive pics of what we can expect from the full collection. With an ode to the glory days of Polaroid film – the C.U team has provided a nostalgic preview modeled by Gavin Grymes.

Take a peek at some pictures below.
