Halloween Inspiration

(Inglorious Bastards‘ Revolutionary Lady. French actress Mélanie Laurent)
It’s that time again to imagine the fantasy of being someone else — for only 1 night. Oh, the responsibility! If done correctly, an outfit can sometimes channel all sorts of qualities we should mediate on. The process of exorcising demons can be healthy on Halloween night.

(Inglorious Bastards‘ Revolutionary Lady. Actress Diane Kruger)
The ladies of Tarantino’s Inglorious Bastards were strong intelligent ruthless killers with vengeance on the mind. Props include sexy little pistols tucked away in private areas.

(Another Tarantino woman. Julie Dreyfus of Inglorious Bastards)
For men, the Bastards outfit makes a good team outfit. Props include large hunting knife for scalping purpose. Brad Pitt plays 1st Lieutenant Aldo Raine, aka “Aldo the Apache”. A thick Tennessee accent is a plus.

(September Issue’s Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington)
Another great team outfit for fashionistas. Props include large chunky sunglasses and red long thick wig.
2009 has a wealth of music icons to poach from… namely, Lady Gaga, who essentially lives every day like it’s Halloween. Lets begin with the infamous “Bubble Dress”. Important to note that this design was considered to be bitten from Hussein Chalayan’s spring 2007 runway show. Tsk Tsk Gaga.

(Hussein Chalayan 2007 Runway. Lady Gaga)
Other looks include: “The Red Blob” look while receiving her MTV award, and her “Bloody White Hot Mess” outfit during the Paparazzi performance. Props include fake MTV Award, and blood (respectively).

Michael Jackson is always a good outfit for any year, but this year in particular is a special moment in history to pay homage to his alter-egos. Although he died early in life, Michael left us with a plethora of iconic years to pilfer.

(Younger Michael)

(The “Smooth Criminal” look. The “Bad” Look.)

(Thriller Sleeve with Pet. The Red MJ ensemble with Ola Ray’s Lepoard Aqua outfit)
For those that want to add a twist to the MJ outfit, go rent Harmony Korine’s film, Mr. Lonely, about a group of impersonators who escape to a commune in order to begin a new life. Samantha Morton plays a Marilyn Monroe impersonator who falls for Diego Luna impersonating Michael Jackson. The commune includes Shirley Temple and Pope impersonators too. A true Mr. Lonely group outfit would probably be recognized by the most astute film-philes.

(Kanye West and Taylor Swift, MTV Awards)
Great for interracial couples partying together… the Kanye/Swift duo adds its own narrative. Props include 1 MTV Award, and 1 Mic to tussle back and forth together. Ladies, try to wear a designer dress here.

(Balloon Boy)
The Bubble Boy scandal was sort of lame I think. But it is nonetheless open for interpretive pot shots this Halloween. Use your imagination here.

Where The Wild Things Are seems like an obvious choice this year, but we had to include it in our wrap-up. Consider not only dressing as Max, but also perhaps as one of the other lovely characters including the lonely white bird. The Wild Things story is a tremendously deep and personal story to reflect on this year… in terms of facing the innocent child and demons within us all.

(Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez)

(Warriors gang, The Furies)
The New York Yankees have been on a tremendous roll the last few weeks with some jaw dropping overtime victories. We expect to see some “Jeters” and “A-rods” crawling around NYC streets this holiday. Props include carrying a bat all night. If you want to add a twist to the Yankee uniform, consider the cinematic Warrior’s baseball gang called “The Furies”. It’s always a New York staple, and never gets old — Represent. Represent.

Another girl who represents New York city (Brooklyn to be specific) is Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Karen is someone who — similar to Gaga, but in an edgier way — dresses like it’s Halloween everyday. We think her energy is another inspiration worth reveling in next weekend.
Good luck. Be safe. Go forth and party.
