Our friends at Chances With Wolves radio show reminded me of this Marvin Gaye cover version of the Star Spangled Banner. Last year, Nike created a commercial spot to honor Team USA representing in the 2008 Beijing Olympics — Kobe, Le Bron, and J-Kidd are beautifully edited in. You can count on Nike to create substantial, inspiring, and uplifting advertisements — and this is one of their best.

To see the original version (the night Marvin sang this at the 1983 NBA All Star Game), go here: Marvin/NBA/1983. This recording is definitely worth a watch simply because you could feel the intoxicating energy from the crowd on the night Marvin made sports history with this track.

Interview project2

David Lynch is an interesting man. He created a website for no reason other than to interview people. No celebs. Just regular Jo Schmo’s he finds on the road, at a bar, at the grocery— driving 20,000 miles through United States. The result? An honest walk through America, and some striking individuals. It’s about peoples day-to-day life, education (or lack therof), dreams, goals, children, work, and home. It’s a sweet site.

Today’s new interview? Hank!

Tunisian Lemon Aid

There are recipes for love, sex, mischief, success, adventure.. I usually find the most memorable mixes of all these elements when I travel. The taste of chocolate in the morning for me will always and forever be a reminder of the most sensual side of Paris. A bubbling pot filled with tomatoes cinnamon, tumeric and curry, where does heady combination of flavors take you? For me it’s the fragrance of a walk on the shores of the icy cold Atlantic under the burning sun of Tangiers. The mouth watering smell wafting from rooftops and kitchen windows at supper time while loosing myself in the beauty of Islamic art at a sea side mosque.

Tunisian Lemon Aid

This summer, in the wet and rain, the smell of lemons being crushed into lemon aid brought the sunshine and freshness of Tunis with it’s white buildings perched like icebergs on high cliffs above turquoise blue seas into my New York City kitchen.

The technique for this full bodied refreshing juice was passed on to me by my dear friend Azzedine from his mother Manoubia’s recipe. (Serves 4)

12 whole lemons
Water
Sugar
Prep:
Wash lemons
Fill a large mixing bowl 3/4 of he way with water.
Add unpeeled lemons to the water and leave to soak at least three hours. The soaking draws the acidity out of the skin.
Turn the lemons occasionally so both sides get a chance to bathe in the water.
Remove lemons from the bowl.
Pour the water used for dousing the fruit down the drain.
Slice the lemons in discs or quarters and remove the seeds.
Place the lemons in their entirety, skin rind and all, in a blender or juicer and puree until the fruit reaches the consistency of a smoothie.
Add sweetener to taste.
Stir.
Pour over crushed ice.

The taste is as bright, pure and fortifying as sunshine.
Joy in a glass.

Why I Love Michael Cera

cera

After screening Michael Cera’s latest alterna-teen dark comedy Youth In Revolt, I realized how much I loved him. From Superbad to Juno to Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, he continues to play the same character – the awkward, mix-tape making, cardigan and vintage t shirt wearing, underdog.

In Paper Heart, his girlfriend Charlene Yi’s quasi documentary about love, out August 7th, Cera essentially plays Cera for the first time on screen. This sweet movie I screened and fell for in Sundance and will probably screen a second time in theaters because I just cant get enough!

Cera will next be seen in Scott Pilgrim vs The World, based on a graphic novel, and from the sound of it, its more of the Cera we know and love. He’s on his face to becoming this generation’s Woody Allen!

INDIGO3
(Writer Indigo Clarke)

We here at Starworks always like to introduce cool new talent when it arrives fresh on our shores. Case in point: Indigo Clarke. I met her through Nicki Bidder in London who ran Dazed & Confused for 8 years, so when Nicki told me “you gotta meet this girl”, I left my hectic desk to go grab a greasy bite in the hood. It turns out Indigo is a cool chick. Her writing is clever and unique. Here’s a few questions with the newly minted Manhattanite.

Which mags do you contribute to?

I am Fashion Features Editor for Lula Magazine UK, Editor at Large for Oyster Magazine AUS, Contributing Features Editor for Russh Magazine AUS, Correspondent for Harper’s Bazaar AUS and write features for AnOther Magazine UK, Plastique Magazine UK and The Melbourne Age Newspaper… as well as a few other bits and pieces.

As a writer (and editor), explain what you’re drawn to? What is your “beat” and how do you pinpoint who you will write about?

I am so inspired by ingenuity and authenticity – the people who experiment and go against prevailing trends to create innovative fashion, music, film, design and art that speaks to people in a unique and meaningful way. So, I am always looking out for inventive, interesting people from all disciplines to write about; they can be talented friends or emerging artists and designers I meet out and about or stumble upon through research – or amazing, established leaders in the creative field that I admire and feel very lucky to meet and interview.

Any bigger dreams or aspirations you have not accomplished yet?

Secretly, I’d love to write a book or screenplay, but I don’t see that happening any time soon! Oh, and of course to write for the The New York Times!

I know you just moved to New York, so what is your plan of attack here in the States — what is your dream assignment?

Plan of attack in NYC – to make everyday a holiday. Even with loads of writing work I feel like I’m on an endless safari in this town – having ridiculous amounts of burgers, fries and margaritas, and managing to make work not feel like work. Dream assignment would be to make my teenage dreams come true and interview the Beastie Boys, Robert Smith or Johnny Depp! Being sent to a tropical island to write a travel story wouldn’t be too bad either… :)
