A close friend of the Starworks family, Lisa Marie Fernandez has been a top stylist for several years now. She’s wandered the Earth in search of the best pieces for International magazines and celebrity clients for almost 2 decades. Recently, Lisa launched her very first swim line and is using her “digging” skills for herself. We asked her a few questions about the spirit of the collection…
Jauretsi: Tell us about your background in fashion and how you ended up making bathing suits?
Lisa Marie Fernandez: I have been a fashion editor, stylist, and consultant for a while now. I have done a lot of consulting work for designers and travel extensively to research for trends. I have had a personal attachment towards bikinis my whole life. I travel to beaches all over the world and my life has revolved around the beach. I know the market extensively professionally and personally. I have enjoyed styling loads of shoots with swim….swim with furs, swim with everything. I did many for Numero. One of my first jobs was a market editor for Elle and one of my markets was swim. I am still styling and consulting. Designing bathing suits comes very easy to me…
After viewing the collection, it is indeed “very Bond girl”…..being a scuba diver myself, these seem practical, durable and sexy at the same time. Exactly what girl do you have in mind as your customer?
The great thing about this collection is the broad appeal. It works for so many different people around the globe. The obvious [customer], the surfers and the scuba girls from Bali to Montauk to Hawaii to Malibu to the Great Barrier Reef. Other customers are the fashion tribes who want the new 80′s inspired bikinis which include the japanese trend driven set, models love them, and many voluptuous woman love them because they hold in the curves. It really attracts all types of woman. Quite amazing, really. I never knew the appeal would be so broad.
I noticed the names from this collection. I’m assuming they are inspired off friends of yours — can you elaborate on the bathing suit names? — the Jane, The Lauren, the Jasmine, the Kristi, the Genevieve, etc.
All the suits were named after real girls that I know….Lauren is Lauren Santo Domingo. Jane is Jane Corser, my friend in Bali. The Genevieve is Genevieve Jones. Lisa Marie after myself. Leigh is Leigh Lazark. The style relates to the type of suit each girl would wear in real life.
