Meet Alex Asher Daniel… man about town, and artist based in downtown Manhattan. Alex works in several mediums, but his upcoming show, May 8th at Kate Robinson Fine Art in NYC will feature a series of 30 charcoal and oil stick on paper. We thought we’d ask Daniel a few things about his art:

What projects are you currently working on?

I am continuing a series I began last year inspired by the ballet and working on a seperate project with choreographer Andrea Miller on a series of paintings… I find dancers to be wonderful models, they too are interested in interpreting and manifesting a thought into something visual. I am working on a new series of portraits, which I am keeping secret.

Also, I have begun two collaborations with different artists, one in photography and one in digital media and I am working on a music project with Emily Kokal from warpaint and Mia Doi Todd. I enjoy working with other artists as I usually am in my studio alone. However, I need a calendar

How would you describe your style/aesthetic?

I am uneasy with the word style, however I will say that I approach my work in certain ways. With portraiture, it is important for me to record the aura, and yet still show a likeness to the physical aspects that people are familiar with. This sometimes can lead to creating order out of chaos, which I love… And with my figurative work, I have been using the body as a tool for working out equations in my head. I am trying to explore various dimensions and the negative space; I enjoy what a painting says in its empty spaces. And there is a lot going on in the negative space of my work, although I’m not sure if anyone else can see it

What was your very first job?

Selling ice cream, I think… I try to forget.

What is it about your style that differs from other artists?

We are all unique. Every individual leads a different existence, seeing things in a different way. It is not possible for an artist to be true to themselves and create work the same as another artist.

What artists are you currently paying attention to?

Thomas Gainsborough and Robert Fludd.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Growing beyond space and time and aging like a fine wine
