Meet Brian Wood….the latest mens designer to catch my eye. With his preppy inspired collection “Flash the Queen” for SS09, Wood first made his mark in 2001 when we was awarded an honorable mention by the CFDA. Ever since, his mensline has made the pages of Nylon, Antenna, Complex and Vibe. Check it out.

What inspired the SS09 collection titled “Flash The Queen”?
Flash the Queen is kind of a mash up of a few things. Rebellion balanced with the expected. Flash the Queen was inspired by a view through the eyes of the anti-establishment within the old English club. The collection pulls inspiration from Wimbledon, prep, sport and forward street culture. I took a clean almost uniform approach w/ a twist of humor.

In 2001 – you were recognized when you were awarded an honorable mention by the CFDA for the junior scholarship program. Was fashion always something you wanted to get into?
No not at all. I always had a fine arts background, but fashion never was a childhood dream. It really was a toss up between Architecture, fine arts and fashion. I kind of had this unconscious force guiding me to do it. So I took the leap and enrolled in fashion design at Pratt Institute.

Who do you consider the Brian Wood customer? What can we expect from your upcoming collections?
Confident fashion forward, creative men. Someone who has a sense of humor someone focused but doesn’t take themselves too serious. He appreciates clothing and the thought that goes into designing it.

Stylistically – how has your look changed since you began designing up until now?
My style and design aesthetic has matured and evolved into a cleaner approach. The use of color is still important but it’s used in a different way to get the same dynamic effect. I think when I started I used a lot of bright colors consistently, now maybe I am a little more subtle with the use of color using it to pop more as an accent. It really all depends on my mood and what I am feeling for the season.

Where do you see the direction of your line going?
I see both lines growing and being carried in more doors domestically and internationally. I see Brian Wood becoming as one of the more forward men’s sportswear brands emerging in the U.S. I feel at times I have designed ahead of the market and now there is an open window of opportunity for me. B my secondary t-shirt line will be reinforcing a place for itself as one of the top t-shirt brands in the in the international street wear market
