Lindsey is a creative spirit based in New York. Aside from being a local cool girl hangin’ on her stoop downtown, she tends to gravitate towards creative projects such as modeling in our lovely short film, Phenomenology of Body (which you’ve read about here lots a few weeks ago) Directed by Daphne Guinness.

What you might not know about Lindsey is that she also designs her very own special line of cloaks. I sat down to ask the mystical lower east sider about her inspirations…

Jauretsi: So of all clothing items, why cloaks?

Lindsey Thornburg: The nature of a cloak is magical and mysterious. Having any reason to implement this into everyday life is pretty awesome. There’s also something very innately comforting about having a fashion forward security blanket joining you on all life’s journeys.

Can describe your choice of fabrics and why?

Finding fabric for my cloaks is like a poem, if I had a voice to sing; exploring eccentric fabrications is the melody… a timeless space where I get lost. WOW. With that being said, most my fabric inspiration is a regurgitation of a South American blanket.

What are the latest developments with the new line, and where is it selling now?

Starting in the fall, I will be selling to Barneys Co-op, Oak NYC, Plush Lush JAPAN and Some Odd Rubies. The latest developments with the line are keeping up with the attention, interest, and development of the line. AND keepin’ up with all that, I want to be cloaked happy warm.

The Beautiful People

July 28, 2008 on 5:08 pm | In Product, - Jauretsi | Comments Off

The folks at Refinery29.com have unearthed a treasure of a book on their website. Found in the bowels of Ebay, The Beautiful People’s Beauty Book contains all the Beauty secrets of a Princess. For real! How great is that book title, by the way?

Written by Princess Luciana Pignatelli (circa 1971) when she was 35 years old, the books language is written from a very fabulous insider point-of-view from a lady who traveled the globe and partied with royalty. Sophia Loren tells her: “Don’t change your nose — learn how to make up your eyes”.

On Hot Baths: “Hot baths should never contain water higher than pelvic level. Above all, the bosom must never soak in the tub. Hot water only drags it down, and no woman wants that. After a warm bath, aim a good blast of cold water on the bosom and thighs. They need it.”

On Homosexual Facial: “The rage a few years ago with the chic Paris homosexuals is this: Take the white of one egg, a teaspoon of the best olive oil, beat, and apply for 20 minutes. Remove with hot face towel, lace trim optional.”

On Massages: Designer Emilio Pucci: “I swim and ski and I have a very strong nervous system, but when I’m tired, there is nothing like a half-hour massage. It is my drug. In Rome, I have two Filipino girls who come to the house. I would never be massaged by a man—I find it distasteful.”

Shark Week!

Best thing about Summer
JAWS poster

I was giddy like a child last night watching my cable. It was the first night of Shark Week on Discovery channel (That’s Ch66, Time Warner, for Manhattan folks). Being a Florida girl with a fisherman father, I’ve been an avid watcher of this longest running Cable series — celebrating its 20 Year Anniversary! My first dog was named Calypso after Jacques Cousteau (shark god himself) because that was the name of his boat — random trivia, I realize.

The programming is basically 1 week of unadultered shark revelations. There’s a doc on flying Great Whites near Australia (see video here on homepage). The shows generally travel to different continents and the docs range from shark scientists to tribal cultures off little islands — all sharing their shark stories. Add incredible ocean cinematography.

Last year, Shark Week featured Sharkman (photo above), some sort of shark whisperer guy who swims UNPROTECTED and plays with Great Whites and casts them under his spell.

Last nights programming was a special Mythbusters. The questions being: Can a shark really be blown to pieces if you put a bullet through an air tank? According to the “making of the film”, the books original author told Steven Spielberg it was impossible to do this, and not accurate. Spielberg of course said, “I don’t care” and opted for his ending of blowing up JAWS into bits and pieces. All I know is my movie theater cheered their butts off.

Check out Mythbusters programming times to see the experiment’s answer for yourself.
