Raised on a diet of broken biscuits, oh
We don’t look the same as you
And we don’t do the things you do
But we live around here too, oh really”

If you don’t live in New York City, and have never attended one of the Misshapes parties but read all their press, you might think, “what do these guys offer besides well styled friend photos?”. The answer is MUSIC. A well curated set of new sounds coming out so fast it’s like catching a deluge in a paper cup. As a DJ, I’m fascinated by how this city turns over every 10 years, and what the zeitgeist holds for the generation after me (and of course before me). I first heard of bands like The Gossip when they played the sweaty packed club of 20-something hipsters. It was a whole new cat life for the club Don Hill’s (home to the other weekly, Beaver, held a decade before). At Misshapes parties, I also heard the musical tastes and playlists of Jarvis Cocker to MIA as they guest DJ’d, along with other surprise guest DJ’s every week. I sponged it all in. The Misshapes grew up, and closed their doors in 2007 (after a strong 5 year run). Thank God because I needed a rest.
The good news is, they seemed to have bottled all their tastes, their conversations, their lifestyles, their designer friends, and their remixes into one giant hub — their new website. Now everyone is invited to the party. Enter Misshapes.com.
Jauretsi: Is this a new incarnation for the MisShapes? How would you say all 3 of you have evolved in the last year?
Geordon: We’ve all evolved and continue to. It’s not a “new incarnation” it’s just an extension of what we’ve always done, which is promote new music. We continue to DJ and make music for fashion shows, Leigh continues to model etc, and we just figured this was the most logical next step for our site. With Misshapes as a party, it was all about fun and promoting new bands and new music. The new site has the same intentions, but since everyone can’t get to one of our parties we wanted to provide an alternative source of all things “Misshapes”. Music we are interested in now, party photos, and blogs by those closest to us.
Jauretsi: In your own words, describe this online world you’ve created? Is it an extension of your brand?
Geordon: It’s MISSHAPES. As we grow we hope people will embrace it as a source for great new music and fashion. It’s an extension of Misshapes for sure, we don’t really consider ourselves a “brand”, but as we grow, with more blogs and a radio show streaming on the site and much more features content (and parties), it will grow to be the largest extension and most important to us, of our Misshapes group.
Jauretsi: Where do you see the next five years going in terms of how young people receive their information and entertainment?
Geordon: It’s tricky, because information gets to people so quickly now. In the first 6 hours of our site being up, it crashed twice due to heavy traffic. Everything is so accessible I can’t imagine things would get faster and any more convenient then they already are. It’s exciting to us that we are living in the age of internet, MySpace etc because it’s allowed us to take the party and ideals we have to an international audience. It allows us to promote and expose peoples bands and music, that say ten years ago, would possibly never have a fighting chance to break through without the internet.
