Happy Birthday Geoff!

I recently went to the tiny yet classic Motor City bar to surprise the unbeknownst Geoff Renaud of Radar Entertainment for his birthday. Geoff always hooks up tons of friends and clients (Jaguar to Nike) so it’s nice to show up and represent on a night like this. His trusty girlfriend, Jill Meenaghan — a powerhouse business woman at Conde Nast — did a proper fake-out and dragged him to the dive bar on a Saturday night.

I got stuck on the Twilight Zone pinball pinball machine. Check out all the little icon subplots in that photo! As you can tell, I’m a fan of the little avant garde 60’s show (Read Come Wander With Me to see one of my favorite episodes).

Jill also made these surprise T-shirts with Geoff as a little tykester, which are well, comical. About half my readers in this industry have probably worked with Geoff at some point, so I thought I’d post his kid mug here. I hope he doesn’t kill me for it.

Love Your Mother

On Earth Day, Starworker Hali and I celebrated the planet and Fashion’s efforts to preserve and conserve. Loomstate, The Sundance Channel and Barneys New York played host, dishing out eco-friendly cocktails from Vodka 360 and offering discounts on Loomstate for Barneys Green clothing for simply dropping off old T’s to be “re-fashioned” into new limited edition versions for Holiday 2008.

Highlight of the evening was a performance by up-and-comer Kate Nash, who preformed 4 songs off her album Made of Bricks, in the intimate setting.

She made sure to remind us all why we were there — to Love Our Mother!

Marfa

Texas Desert Under the Stars

If you’re looking to travel on a whim to one of the downlo sexy cities in America, take a look at West Texas. Marfa is in the middle of nowhere and takes trains, planes, and automobile’s — so the fact its the First Annual Marfa Film Festival next week, is reason alone to take the hike. Susannah Lipsey is acting as the festivals Special Events Director (May 1st to May 5th), and told me about the cool happenings next week.

A little background for those who’ve never heard of Marfa (I can hear some jaded fashionistas now rolling their eyes with the quintessential line, “oh Marfa, we already knew about that”). So this is for the virgins.

A remote town located near the Big Bend National Park, Marfa has been a hub for high-art due to the children of Donald Judd who’ve managed to rebuild the town as an art community. There is one monster collection outdoors (referred to as The Chinati Foundation), except this tour is an outdoor gallery/museum/space/collection unlike any other. Read Men’s Vogue for that feature. The New Yorker referred to it as the “Xanadu of Minimalism”. ‘Nuff said.

Then there’s the cinematic history this little town embodies. It was the set for James Deans’ last film, Giant, with Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, and Dennis Hopper about the lives of Texan barons. The movie’s grand mansion (a hollow Hollywood-built facade still exists in Marfa!).

But back to the festival next week, good ‘ol Dennis Hopper is attending the screening in a few days to represent for Giant. He hasn’t been to Marfa in 50 years since she shot the movie. Oh, and he’s also bringing with him some rare little film he made called The Last Movie which won at the 1971 Venice Film Festival. Memories!

Onto contemporary cinematic history. Marfa is responsible for helping a major assist at the Oscar race this year. That’s 8 nominations for No Country For Old Men and 8 nominations for There Will Be Blood, altogether 16 trophy opportunities for a tiny little town with no movie theater.

The best part is that the festival will be hosting a 35mm screening outdoors of There Will Be Blood on the actual set where it was made. The gigantic 40 x 20 foot screen belongs to Austin’s famous Alamo Drafthouse Rolling Roadshow. It’s gonna be a sweet night for the locals, cast, and crew of the flick — some whom haven’t even seen the movie yet!

I can’t list the entire week of screenings and events on this blog, but one more thing is worth mentioning. There is a music/film collective called “The Masses” who will be visiting Marfa to premiere some music videos directed by Matt Amato, Shannyn Sossamon, and Jon Ramos. Heath Leger (who had created within this collective) will be there in spirit as they all present never-seen-before stuff he was involved in. Peace to the Texan desert air that night. Heath was our James Dean.

Her words on the city this week: “The vibe here is sunny — warm in days, cool at night. It’s pretty mellow but there is ALWAYS something going on. I always seem to find myself in the most random and spontaneous of situations down here – I love it. People from New York, LA, and artists from all over seem to be navigating here. There’s a broad range of locals (young to older) in a very relaxed environment inspiring one another creatively and appreciating one another’s individuality.”

Stay tuned for a future post where I’ll write about Susannah’s little bohemian headpieces which she designs and creates herself. For now, we’ll let her focus on the hectic schedule that awaits her.

Summer Looks

Can some designer please bite some of these snazzy Summer Looks?

I’m a big fan of convertible looks (car to beach blanket to water turn-overs). Makes packing for beach trips easier too. Too bad we can’t wear these cuts anymore without looking silly retro either, but boy, did our grandparents know how to make bathing suits.

On another tip, I love 50’s reels with their dramatic music and RKO sounding narrator. Check out the actual video short here to see the new 50’s looks from the “solar system of swimwear” as he says.

New Wonderland issue!

The Starworks crew showed up to London’s swank event at the The Red Bar (Grosvenor House Hotel) last Friday, April 18th. It was to celebrate the new issue of one of our fabulous magazine clients, Wonderland. Daphne Guinness came and pretty much said “everybody there was either interesting, cool, or both. It was a great showcase for the magazine.”

Starworks’ London lady Jane Hanrahan said “There was already a queue lining up outside when they opened the doors at 7.30pm. The party was accompanied by a non stop supply of Moet – always a good sign. Dominic Cooper showed up straight off a plane, looking as cool as ever to honor the issue which he’s featured in… and really… who isn’t lusting after red lackered walls in their house after dancing by the bar all evening?!”
